WordPress is a content management system or software that helps us to create, maintain and publish a website or a blog. WordPress is an open source meaning we are free to do whatever we want with WordPress software files. Anyone can receive the service of WordPress in two different places. One is wordPress.com and the other one is WordPress.org. With WordPress.org, one can host his/her own blog or website. WordPress.org is where one will find the free WordPress software that he/she can download and install on his/her web server. WordPress.com, on the other hand, takes care of all of the hostings for us. We don’t have to download software, pay for hosting, or manage a web server.
Last week, I have created my own website with WordPress.org in CT101 class. In the admin panel, there are lots of options to customize the website. So, I thought to write a blog post about the functions of these different options.
Dashboard: After opening the admin page, the first function on the left-hand side is the dashboard. This is the brain behind our website, the place where we can let our creativity explode, writing brilliant prose and designing the best and most lovely website possible. This is where the organization of our sites begins – and this is just the start. Because of having different types of learners, I will add one video content and one reading content that will explain the function of dashboard more in details.
Posts & Pages: The next option after dashboard is Posts. Under the Posts option, there are four categories: All posts, Add new, Categories and Tags. Posts can be defined by time-sensitive content that can be categorized, tagged and archived. Pages are timeless content or information. Page does not have the ability to be categorized and tagged (Posts Vs Pages). We all know how to use All posts and add new categories. This video link will help us to understand the function of categories and tags: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alIf-elvWUs
Media: In order to explain the use of the Media option, I will provide a link that explains almost every function that we can perform through this option. The link: https://ithemes.com/tutorials/using-the-wordpress-media-library/
Links: When we are writing a blog, Link is a great source to redirect or show our reader the resources that we have used to write the blog. This is a link that will provide resource about the use of this option correctly: https://ithemes.com/tutorials/adding-links-in-wordpress/
Comments: One of the important factors of writing a blog is getting feedback. Sometimes the feedbacks come in the form of appreciation, sometimes as constructive criticism and other times the comments come in the form of discouragement. Thus, to manage the comments when writing a blog can be crucial and important. The following link will provide effective information that will help us to learn the management of comment on our blog posts:
Appearance: It is an important option for customizing the look of our website. There are six categories under this option including Themes, Customize, Widgets, Menus, Header, and Editor. Each one of this option performs the specific function to make our website professional and presentable. The following link has an elaborate explanation about the use of Appearance to make our website professional and presentable.
Plugins: A WordPress Plugin is a program or a set of one or more functions written in the PHP scripting language, that adds a specific set of features or services to the WordPress site. We can seamlessly integrate a plugin with the site using access points and methods provided by the WordPress Plugin Application Program Interface (API). It allows us to easily modify, customize, and enhance a WordPress site. Instead of changing the core program code of WordPress, you can add functionality with WordPress Plugins. Here is a basic definition. This video will explain how to use Plugin or how to install new Plugin in the WordPress website: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SglJxhhSA7o
Users, Tools, Settings: These options also play important roles to customize and manage WordPress website. The following link will help to understand the function and use of these options: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1AA4lQ26_0
I know in class Professor gave us links to help us customize the basics of our websites. The links that I have provided are shorter videos and they are broken up small parts. I believe this will help people to focus on different parts of this website when we are customizing and will provide more in-depth information.
